In 1807 Brongniart published Traité élémentaire de minéralogie, a work commissioned as a textbook for his and Haüy's courses at the Faculté de Sciences and the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle. He adopted a simple scheme of classification based mainly on physical properties, but he also made extensive use of Haüy's crystallographic work. Like other mineralogists at this time, he could not easily distinguish some fine-grained rocks from true simple minerals; but he classed clay and basalt for example, as fausses espèces, recognizing thet they were "mélangées although" they were too fine-grained to be analyzed. He emphasized the importance of studying the modes of occurrence of minerals as well as their properties, but firmly avoided any discussion of their origins as being too speculative. The sole exception to this was a review of divergent opinions on the aqeous or igneous origin of basalt, but even in this he avoided expressing his own opinion.

Zittel in his History of geology and palaeontology: "In 1829 he made the attempt to describe all the rocks composing the earth's crust in chronological order, and to introduce a new nomenclature for the successive horizons of rocks, which should be quite independant of lithological features. In his system Brongniart distinguished nine classes of Terrains... sub-divided in Formations or Groups... and the Formations are again devided into Sub-Formations (Sous-Formations)... The most valuable part of Brongniart's work is the large number of lists enumerating the characteristic fossils in the sub-formations."

In this beautifully illustrated monograph that obviously filled a need among geologists, he gave an exhaustive account of all the methods of analyzing sedimentary rocks: physical, microchemical and chromatic. He then proceeded to distinguish all the constitutive elements of these deposits, describing each individual mineral species as well as the various organisms that contributed to their genesis.
