Rare first edition and early description of fossil Belemnites which were kept in Klein's own museum in Danzig, when he was a court secretary from 1714. DSB VII, 401: "Klein's taxonomic method was based entirely on external characteristics, such as the number and position of limbs and the mouth; and he vigorously opposed any method, including the Linnaean system, based on characteristics not visible externally." The fine plates are engraved by the Nuremberg collector and artist georg Wolfgang Knorr (1705-1761), famous for his outstanding palaeontological work 'Die Sammlung von Merkwuerdigkeiten der Natur'. Especially the last plate is very fine. Ex libris with CJR.

This is a super-complete copy, although maybe plate 3 is lacking, but as we cannot trace its description it might not have been published at all. Rare fundamental palaeontological work by this famous Belgian palaeontologist, who also published the faune du calcaire carbonifère de la Belgique with 185 plates, which we also have. See Zittel, History of the Geology and Palaeontology: "With the fauna and palaeontological subdivision of the Carboniferous limestone De Koninck occupied himself for more than fifty years. His monograph of the fossil fauna of the Belgian Carboniferous limestone... are stil the basis of all European research on the faunas of the Caerboniferous limestone". Several plates are mounted and have the numbers of the figs added in an old hand (d'Orbigny's?)... one states: bon pour... (inredable) with corrections of the author (?). The title is mounted.
